Returnal Levels Up with a Free PS5 Pro Upgrade

Returnal Just Got a Free PS5 Pro Upgrade – And It’s Glorious

Last Updated: May 6, 2025By
Returnal, one of the PS5’s most intense and visually stunning exclusives, just got a major glow-up. To celebrate the game’s fourth anniversary, Housemarque has released a free PS5 Pro upgrade, and the results are impressive, to say the least.

Let’s get straight to the numbers: the original PS5 version ran at a fixed 1080p, upscaled to 4K using some visual trickery like temporal reconstruction and checkerboard rendering. While the game still looked great, it wasn’t exactly pin-sharp — especially when the screen exploded with particles, enemies, and chaos. But now? The PS5 Pro version introduces dynamic resolution scaling, peaking at 3072×1728. That’s a huge jump — more than the promised 2.5x increase — and the difference is immediately noticeable in the details.

Think less shimmer on staircases, fewer flickering edges, and a cleaner image overall. While it doesn’t add flashy extras like ray-traced reflections or new effects from the PC version, the upgrade does what it sets out to do: make Returnal look and feel better on Sony’s beefed-up console.

Performance-wise, the PS5 Pro helps Returnal stay locked at 60fps more consistently, especially during hectic boss fights and heavy combat sequences. That said, some micro-stutters and traversal hitches do remain — it’s not perfect, but it’s noticeably smoother where it counts.

And yes, if you’re the kind of person who wants pixel counts and frame-time graphs, Digital Foundry has a fantastic video breakdown that covers every technical detail — definitely worth watching if you want to geek out.

No new content, no extra modes, but this is still a very welcome refresh of a game that already pushed the PS5 hard. If you own a PS5 Pro and haven’t revisited Atropos in a while, now’s the perfect time. Just don’t forget to stretch — your reflexes are about to be tested. *cracks knuckles*
